Club Legend Alby Woods in action early 2005/06 season.
Alby started out with North Castlemaine in the 1964/65 season and played in all grades for the club. Overall he played more than 320 games for North. Alby received Life Membership of the Club in 1979 and Association in 1992. He went off umpiring for a few season's in the 1990's, but returned to play, in the lower grades. His last game for the club was in the final round of 2005/06 when he played in B Grade. Alby didn't get to bat, but was next in at No.8 as he watched the father & son, Oliver combination add 100 partnership. At 62 years Alby took the keeping gloves and kept for the last time. He took 2 catches before handing the gloves over and then took the final catch in the field to end the match. Alby and his wife Denise then left for a trip to Western Australia. Tragically Alby was washed off rocks while fishing and drowned, near Esperance. Days later at the Club's Trophy Presentation day, Alby's wife Denise accepted his trophy for most catches in B grade. He finished with 10. Along the way Alby was Club Vice President, spent many years on committee and as curator. He won club awards a few times. These included batting averages, most catches, best clubperson and was also a captain. In Alby's memory, his family have donated a trophy to the club for senior players, and the Club have named the C Grade Club Champion Trophy in his honour. |
